Farmhouses

A fantastic home based on practical, time-honored designs.

Long before today’s ‘Modern Farmhouse’ craze, Catskill Farms was quietly honing a design aesthetic that looked back to the simple houses dotting the farmland just north of NYC; homes from the mid-1920’s Sears Catalogue, homes from our travels and from our places we grew up, like Lancaster, PA. Founder, Charles Petersheim saw a niche for this time-inspired home, but updated. A home without the required gut renovation, without lingering issues even after wallet, heart and soul had been poured into the 150-year-old home.  A new home built from the intangible warmth and comfort an older home provided.

The traditional American farmhouse, like the farm and farm owners, was modest, a workhorse. It was functional and utilitarian. Catskill Farms Farmhouses pay tribute to the simple magic of these straight-forward homes. We souped them up with bigger windows, more open floor plans, higher ceilings, bigger and more baths.  It’s still a classic home, it’s just a little racier.

An element of these homes – their simple and modest design approach – allows for us to take one floor plan and expand or contract it, create a multitude of sizes and price points out of one original farmhouse.  Many of the distinctive farmhouses have options at 1,600 sf, 1,900 sf, and 2,200 sf.

The architecture of a farmhouse is a setting for a way of life.

We come to this style early, and naturally, inspired by the true farms of the Catskills and Hudson Valley areas, and truly across the country. Using natural materials, reclaimed lumber, barn doors and hardware, the Catskill Farms’ homes stand out among the Sullivan Catskills, Ulster County and Hudson Valley Real Estate as being the best of both worlds. A terrific home based on practical, time-honored designs, with updated interiors that serve quiet family weekends as well as expanded holiday retreats.

Catskill Farms has for 20 years decorated and dotted the countryside with thoughtful and respectful new construction in the upstate New York counties of Ulster and Sullivan. Each home is paired well with an interesting piece of real estate, scouted, vetted and test driven by Founder Charles Petersheim, who has achieved 200+ successful pairings.

Driven with a simple passion for high ceilings, big windows, good land in good locations and a mantra of design restraint, the homes of Catskill Farms have been a crowd-pleaser and go-to choice of the Metro NYC crowd for 2 decades. Thoughtfulness has defined its entire journey.

Anatomy of a

Farmhouse

Style Home

The idea of our farmhouses is more than of a collection of design elements: wooden clapboard, wide plank floors, apron sinks, plank walls, large covered porches, plenty of bedrooms, subway tile, fireplaces, shaker doors, etc... It’s a palette for our modern dwellers/buyers – good design, respectful of the American Farmhouse tradition, able to support a wide range of interior design and furnishing directions. Our homeowners enjoy long afternoons on the covered porches, cooking with friends and family in the large open kitchens, plethora of bedrooms for family and guests; a respite, a getaway, a comfortable feeling.
